Tip Of The Day

Give you dog something to do, Hide cookies/ball in the back yard and let him find it.

Be An ALPHA leader For Your Dog

Let me tell you about being an alpha leader of your pack (Example: You, Wife, Kids, Dog) You see I'll placed YOU in front, the dog behind all the family members. In all cases the dog is the last in rank. If you have several dogs the ranks will be filled in by their selves. (Strong healthy and big then the older dog or smaller dog)

When I was a young boy I watched a lot of nature movies especially with wolves in it. The wolf is the great grandfather of the dog (by the way I love wolves). There is a story about a boy and a young puppy wolf that he found and raises him till the young pup was old enough to return to the wild. He brought the wolf pup miles away from home to go to his own family. After a few days the pup returned to the boy because he loved the way he was pet. That wolf pup was the first housedog. A lot of behavior of the wolf you see back in your own dog!!!

In this picture you see wolves puppy licking their mothers mouth = Showing Respect and please give me food Mom!!

If your dog is rather pushy and out of control, lacks respect for your point of view and doesn't mind letting you know about it he or she could be showing signs of the ALPHA SYNDROME!

Many behavior problems start with the rank position. IN MOST CASES, WE ARE NOT REALLY DEALING WITH A PROBLEM DOG, BUT A PROBLEM ENVIRONMENT OR PROBLEM RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DOG AND OWNER. Dogs, just like their ancestor the wolf, need a leader. If the dog is not provided with appropriate guidance, if in your dog's opinion you are not a worthy leader, your dog may try to take over and call the shots. In other words, your dog may be running for higher rank.

Small dogs are also a big problem now days, the think they are big dogs and behave like that, the problem start with the Alpha leader. In many cases the Alpha leader treats the dog as their own child. Example: the dog sleeps in bed, the dog sleeps on the sofa, the owner doesn't see, he place the dog at the same level as the Alpha leader.

 What to do?

The Alphabetizing plan will make an improvement on how your dog views the social hierarchy in your pack. This plan involves changing daily interactions with your dog. It does not resort to punishment and very few actual TRAINING exercises are used.

Implement as many of the concepts as you possibly can. Stay with it for several weeks. It will take some time to change, to see you're changing; therefore it may take a little time to change your dogs mind about things. As your dog becomes rehabilitated, you may gradually phase out these corrective measures.

Good luck and remember - dog ownership is not a democracy. Be firm, be patient, be consistent, but be ALPHA!

A LEADER MUST FIRST GET THE FOLLOWER'S ATTENTION!

Encourage eye contact several times a day: Call your dog's name, help the dog make eye contact with you by tracing a line with your hand between your dog's face and yours. You can make your hand more interesting by holding a toy or other inducement. Even a one second glance should be reinforced with praise or a reward. You are setting up communication channels and a bond between you and your dog.

A LEADER IS DEPENDABLE

Scheduled (rather than free choice) meals aid in housetraining problems and put your dog in a position of dependence on you for food. (More than one meal a day will relieve “hunger stress”). Food is a primary reinforcer. Use it to your best advantage.

LEADERS EAT FIRST

If your meals coincide with the dog's scheduled meals, make it a point to feed the dog AFTER you have eaten. Dogs are nonverbal communicators. This is a statement. Remember the National Geographic specials! Which wolf eats first? Tip: Once a week take his bowl away while he eats ( you have control always, when he eats, how much and what he eats, when he is finished take his bowl away and replace it at the next meal).

EARNING PRAISE AND TREATS

Stop all food treats and petting for your dog during this rehabilitation period EXCEPT what is “earned” by obeying a command. Examples: If your dog comes to you for attention, tell the dog to “sit” before petting. A brief heeling session can precede a treat. Don't worry; this is only a temporary measure until your dog's behavior improves!

LEADERS GO FIRST

Don't allow your dog to charge in and out of “territory” before you. At the door of your home, vehicle, or at a fence gate, put your dog on a stay, go through first, and then call the dog in or out.

THE LEADER CONTROLS THE TERRITORY

A follower yields to the leader. For instance: If your dog is lying down in a hallway and you wish to pass, MAKE YOUR DOG MOVE, don't step over or around.

LEADERS MEAN WHAT THEY SAY

When giving your dog a command, don't beg or scream, speak in low firm tones. And remember, no matter how simple the command, give it only once and make sure to help your dog comply.

LEADERS ARE WINNERS

“Control the games, control the dog.”

Ordinarily tug-of-war games are inappropriate for a pushy dog. It may escalate assertiveness and when you let go; your dog considers it a “win”. An important message can be conveyed, however, if you play by these rules.

Keep the game brief so your dog won't become overly excited. Be sure to WIN (have your dog release the toy to you) and while your dog is watching, put the toy away for the day, out of the dog's reach.

LIFE WITH YOUR DOG IS NOT A DEMOCRACY

. . . But please be a kind and gentle dictator! I'd like to think of it as a partnership, with you making the important decisions! To help explain this to your dog, for now, you get the bed! Your dog may sleep in your bedroom at night, but until the behavior problem's resolved, not on your bed. Sleeping together in the bed makes you seem like a littermate, an equal. Besides, there have been MANY alpha confrontations regarding possession of resting areas!

ALPHA OWNERS ARE FUN

Do some things you know your dog will enjoy, but you should remain “in charge” of these activities. For example: If your dog likes to retrieve, tell your pal to COME, help with compliance if necessary, and as a reward, play fetch. Help your dog release the object immediately on command. When play is over, praise and as the dog watches, put the object away.

TALK TO YOUR VETERINARIAN

- About neutering or spaying your dog. Frequently this procedure has a positive impact on behavior problems and your veterinarian will explain numerous other benefits as well.

A thorough exam is important to determine if your dog's misbehavior is caused by a physical problem.

MUZZLE CONTROL IS A NATURALLY DOMINANT GESTURE

Put your hand over the top of your dog's muzzle and gently hold it there for a few seconds. This can be a regular part of your petting and attention.

BELLY UP IS A NATURAL ACCEPTANCE POSTURE

Once a day invite your dog over for a free belly rub. Show your pet how enjoyable this gesture of sub ordinance can be.

A FOLLOWER ALLOWS GENTLE HANDLING

Have regular grooming sessions with your dog. With positive reinforcement, gradually include “sensitive” spots, if any. Your goal is to have your dog relax and allow you to brush (or at least pet) the belly area.

DOWN IS A SUBORDINATE POSITION

Have your dog hold one 30-minute down-stay per day. Enforce it!! This can be done while you eat a meal or read the paper, but be sure you are in a position to help your dog stay down.

TRAIN, DON'T COMPLAIN

Give your dog about twenty minutes of obedience training a day. Break it up into two or three sessions. You do not have to be a member of an organized obedience class for this, but the guidance of a qualified instructor and the group experience for the dog are valuable. Give a command, help your dog comply, praise for a job well done.

LEADERS ARE FAIR, KIND, CONSISTENT

Be firm, not harsh. Don't work with your dog if you lose your patience, but stay with it! The concept of an alpha owner will become clear to your dog with consistent positive repetition.

How To Choose A Puppy

How to pick the best puppy

Hi my name is Ed, in this blog I tell you about how to choose your dog and help you step by step to pick the best dog there is. A new dog is always fun and I hope your picked a breed that match with your personality. Let me tell you a little bit about me, I am an handler, I trained most of the times big dogs (German Sheppard's) for Pro-use "security or guard dogs" and always start with a puppy.

Why? because I want to shape my new dog my own way, it's going to be my best friend ever for most of the 'times 12 years", used dogs have most of the times issues (bite problems and other problems) that's hard to get out, and when you do it takes a lot of time and afford but that's a choice my personal choice. In a next blog I will write about having a new puppy, but ok here we go how to choose a dog.

Step 1

1.       What kind of breed you want?

2.       What do you want from the dog?

3.       Small middle or big?

4.       hairy or less hairy?

5.       want kind of sex you want?

All personal flavors!!!

Get as much information about the dog you can, use Google to find all the information you need about the breed you want. Does the dog character and breed fit to my personal life?? example: if you're in the mid 70's you don't choose a big dog that needs a walk every day for at least an hour "you choose a small dog and maybe an older dog, no puppy. Example: if you are very active with running every morning, it should be nice if your dog is running next to you, don't buy a heavy dog or small Bulldog.

Next step will be what do you want from the dog, a house dog don't go further then a few tricks and that's fine for a lot of people.

Step 2

1.       Housedog

2.       Housedog with training

3.       Housedog with extra training

4.       Pro-Dog for work or business

Ok done that!! now you have chosen your breed check!! you have make up your mind the breed fits in your personal life Check!! and how much time you can spend of your new dog ( how bigger the dog how more exercise it will need and care)

Puppy

Most of the puppy's leave there mother around 9-12 weeks that a rule, as a new buyer of your puppy you should know that already, also and I support that, buy your puppy by the breeders that specialized themselves at one breed. They are specialized on one breed and they will do anything to help you with your questions. More puppy breeds,  I'll found out in the past, "yes I made mistakes as well in the past" don't help the breed in the future with any new developed diseases or hip diseases.

In my case I want to buy a German Sheppard puppy to train with him, to do shows with him and do some guard work with him.

Step 3

1.       Make a appointment with a breeder

2.       Check if the breeder is well known

3.       Check if the breeder gave the puppy injections for sickness and worms

4.       Every puppy has a doggie passport ask that, you want to know if this is a good breeder

5.       Is area clean?? the puppy's are inside the house most of the time or in an barn is it clean?

6.       Are the puppy's well fed (round belly's)

I will pick a good father dog and mother dog and I'll want to see them in person, in action, and in real life. Most of the time it takes me a few mounts to select a good breeder with several visits, so don't buy one today!!!

Step 4

1.       Every young puppy is amazing to see

2.       Don't bring any children or your grandma with you till the last visit (they distracted you from a good choice)

3.       Bring something with you, something what is new for the puppy's example: a ball or doll, and a set of keys and a old sweater of something like that (we want to see how they react on new things)

4.       Bring a  3 set of ribbon red yellow and green with you ( for example: 5 puppies in a room you pick one and  next week it is hard to remember which  one it was. Most of the breeders do that already for you.

Ask the breeder to put all puppies in a area without the mother dog, closed area ( hallway, room, box ) now you have all the puppies around you. Without any interfering from others, (dog or humans) observes the puppy's (one is sleepy, the other one is shy, the other one is afraid and another is playful. It takes a few minutes for them to smell you, and they will do their own thing.

Take you new toy (doll, ball)  "in my case a doll" out of your pocket and throw it in the middle of the room, the one that is first at your toy is noisy (ferry good) for learning things to your dog. The one that stay sleepy is a good house dog but don't aspect much from him, the one that goes to the corner of the room is the worst choice you can make!! the one that react and then jump and bite in the toy is good as well.

Make one choice and ribbon him, next try out: set of keys or iron bowl throw them around as well, the one at first by your set of keys ribbon him. The last exercise is with an old sweater, sweep gently over the ground with your sweater, the one that bites in my sweater is my choice, your choice properly going to be to one that wait and then bites the sweater because that is the one that going to be a good home dog, the one that don't take interest in the sweater is not a issue.( in this case is biting not aggressive, but he want to learn (just like small kids they take everything in their mouths, it is a strong dog that need a good Alpha leader (owner) in my case I want a good strong dog, in your case probably the one that wait and then bites because you need the dog for at home.

In most of the cases I'll end up with two, tree puppies with ribbons on nice!!!!!

Test these 3 puppies again the next week and then pick one, they are all good dogs.

Dog Loud Noises and Thunder Fears

Loud Sounds and thunder makes my dog jumpy and stressful

Many dogs fear thunder and loud sounds

Many dogs exhibit fear of thunder and/or other loud noises. This phenomenon is actually very common, and affects dogs of both sexes and all breeds, including mixed-breed dogs. Some dogs show fear of thunder, yet have no reaction to other types of loud noises such as guns. Because of that observation, there is some speculation that the dog is reacting partially to the atmospheric pressure changes during a storm, as well as to the noise itself.

It has been observed that dogs which display no fear of storms as puppies may develop this fear later in life, although the reason or reasons why this happens remain unclear. There is some speculation that early exposure to thunderstorms and similar loud noises (fireworks, etc.) may accustom the dogs to these noises, therefore reducing the possibility that the dog will develop the fear later in life. No scientific research has yet been done to substantiate this, however.

There are many different ways to help your dog cope with this fear. Some of them are listed here, and you should review them all, and choose the method best suited to your dog based on his temperament, environment, and the degree of fear he displays. Please do talk to your vet prior to using any of the drugs mentioned to make sure your dog has no medical condition that would make a drug dangerous to him.

Slight Reactions - Pacing, Panting, Slight Distress

If your dog has a slight reaction, perhaps pacing the floor unable to settle down to sleep, panting a little more than usual, or showing slight signs of distress, but no panic, you may want to try one of the suggestions listed here. If your dog truly panics, there is a later section with suggestions for the more serious problem.

Only the crate training, if they have open access to their crate at all times, and noise de-sensitization are effective if the storm occurs when you are not home. However many of these methods will reduce the dogs stress to a level that they will be unconcerned with storms even when you are absent after enough time.

Crate Training (Safe Place)

If your dog is crate trained, or has a place that he considers his "safe place", you may find that he will ride out the storm better if he is confined to his safe place. He may actually want to be there, but feel a need to protect you that prevents him from going there. In this case you will see that he will settle down and relax more when you confine him to his safe place, thus relieving him of the responsibility of protecting you, and allowing him to stay where he is most comfortable.

Many dogs with a fear of thunder do better with an airline crate, or a wire crate that is covered, than an open wire crate.

Calm Reassurance

Some dogs merely need to be reassured that there is nothing to be afraid of. This is easier if you are not worried about the storm. If the storm makes you nervous, your dog may well be picking up on that.

However, you must be careful about the way you do this, and make sure you are not inadvertantly rewarding the dog for a fear reaction. If you positively reinforce fear reactions with unintentional praise - such as softly crooning or stroking when the dog exhibits fear, it is likely that the reactions will continue.

A variant of this approach is the "no big deal" approach. Because dogs are very sensitive to the moods of the people in their lives, they can be influenced by how people react to a storm. By simply ignoring the storm and carrying on with a normal household routine, you send the dog the message that the storm is no big deal. Talking to the dog in a light, happy tone of voice ("You're being SO silly! This is really no big deal.") and perhaps encouraging it to find a quiet place to settle down will often reassure the dog without reinforcing its fearful reaction to the storm.

Another way to reassure the dog without inadvertantly praising or reinforcing the fear reaction, is to massage your dog or brush your dog in long even strokes.

Positive Re-inforcement

One solution for mild fear of storms is to associate the storms with something wonderful. If your dog has a favorite indoor game, or a special treat, provide that during the storm. Many times they will get so absorbed with their game, or the possibility of a favored and special treat, that they will forget to worry about the storm. If you make this a practice during most storms, they will start to associate the storm with good things.

Noise De-Sensitization

Exposing your dog to many different loud noises every week, and always making sure something good happens, can help to reduce the dogs sensitvity to loud noises. Many hunting dogs look into the sky during storms looking for the birds that must be falling for them to retrieve. You can also play tapes of storms, starting at a low volume and working up to very high volume, and stroke them, play with them, and teach them to ignore the sound.

For dogs that seem to react to more than the noise alone, many behaviorists reccomend a more indepth scenario - such as placing a cookie sheet in the shower and turning it on to simulate the sound of rain and darkening the room as much as possible.

Some people treat dogs like kids, dogs like that!!" in stead of taking 1 finger they try to take the whole hand" in other words: they keep on trying till they get it and believe me they will because you give it!!
